Tweet Tweet Tip

By Lindsay Higgins

With all the social media platforms out there, it’s tempting to want to focus your efforts on to just one or two specific mediums like Instagram or Facebook.  Keeping up with social media is time consuming, not to mention it’s difficult to try to always have creative posts without getting repetitive.
For me, my weakest link for social media is definitely Twitter.  Facebook makes sense to me with the ability to share a story or pictures.  The same goes for Instagram and Snapchat.  But Twitter is limiting, exhausting and is often time consuming because it requires posts multiple times a day.
However, if you’re thinking of abandoning Twitter, a recent study will change your mind.  According to a Cision report, a grand total of 40 percent of journalists source their stories on Twitter and Twitter feeds.  In fact, it has been verified that one fourth of the users are actually journalists.  It’s pretty evident that if you are in the journalism, public relations, advertising field, Twitter is a huge component.
Where else can you get minute-by-minute updates for conventions, politics and news?  Facebook might be more in depth, but Twitter is where you go for constant streaming and news.  The question then is, how to keep your followers engaged without overwhelming them, and providing new, newsworthy content every day.  There are a few steps you can take to ensure this.

The first, it’s easy to keep users following your brand because it is a real time conversation (just over the web).  Peoples’ feeds are constantly refreshing with the most current tweets at the top.   It’s easy to find what’s new.  With that point, comes an obvious piece of advice…it is crucial that you respond back and forth with your customers and viewers.  We all know that good public relations tactics are interactive and this is the perfect medium for it.
The second tip is a great one.  Videos in Twitter feeds are now set to automatically begin playing as a user scrolls down.  In a social media medium full of text, a video can have a huge impact and hook your audience.  It’s eye catching and can definitely generate attention.
Finally, hash tags are your friend.  Some individuals in the public scorer the web and get on random tangents all from clicking on one hash tag that interests them.  It’s incredibly important to use simple, short and sweet hash tags to represent your brand.  Make the spelling easy and about your brand.
Twitter is undeniably an important tool for most professions.  Sure, it might get overwhelming and at times strenuous, but it is worth it to reach that particular target audience.  Make sure to always communicate, utilize videos and create hash tags that are easily recognizable and simple.
